While new freshmen and transfer
students adjust to life at Oklahoma Christian University, a faculty member is
adjusting to her new role on campus as well.
Allison Garrett, Vice President for
Academic Affairs, is an addition to the staff at Oklahoma Christian this
semester. An Oklahoma Christian alumnus herself, Garrett graduated in the class
of 1984 with an English degree and attended law school at the University of
Tulsa. She continued her education at Georgetown in Washington D.C. where she
received an additional law degree.
Garrett previously worked at
Faulkner University in Alabama as a law professor. At the same time, she was on
OC's Board of Trustees. She chose to come to Oklahoma Christian because
she "loved being a professor, but also missed the administrative side of
things, and it seemed like a good combination of academic and administrative
roles," Garrett said.
Garrett has also worked for
Wal-Mart, as both vice president and general counsel of the corporate division,
and the vice president of benefits. Her office displays plaques from the places
she has traveled in her field of work.
Garrett is now responsible for the hiring of faculty, helping oversee
curriculum changes and reviewing the catalogs and marketing productions on
Her plans do not include changes,
only improving what OC has previously instated.
"I think as an institution, we
have been reticent to brag about how great our university is. While I
appreciate modesty, I think we can all work together to tell our story a little
bit better," Garrett said.
During her time as an Oklahoma
Christian student, Garrett worked as a tour guide at Enterprise Square. Garrett
is ecstatic about the faculty, staff and students on the campus of Oklahoma
"The friendliness and work
ethic of students and faculty just reconfirms that the university has a
terrific future ahead," Garrett said.
Garrett's husband is still in
Alabama teaching this semester at Faulkner's law school. She and her husband,
Chip, have three children, who are in elementary, middle and high school in
