Patterson named ‘Teacher of Year’ by Professional Journalists

Dr. Philip Patterson, distinguished professor of mass communication at Oklahoma Christian University, will be honored as Teacher of the Year by the Oklahoma Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists at a ceremony on February 20. The award is given annually to a high school or college teacher who has had an exceptionally positive impact on their journalism students.

Joshua Bam, a recent journalism graduate of Oklahoma Christian, said, "Dr. Philip Patterson was one of the primary reasons I decided toattend Oklahoma Christian University in 2005. His lust for knowledgeand drive for excellence push students far above their own perceivedpotential. But more so, his teaching style provides students thenecessary foundation to learn on their own.His coursework requires students to think originally and internalizematerial. This style of teaching ensures students walk away from his classes with the ability to learn regardless of how much pure contentthey were able to absorb.”

Philip is not only a great teacher, he is a scholar, an author, a trusted advisor, a stellar example, and a mentor to dozens of students and professionals. He certainly deserves this wonderful honor. Dr. David Lowry, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said, "Dr. Philip Patterson is one of OC’s premier professors. His reputation in the field of media ethics has brought him acclaim from educators around the world. In addition Dr. Patterson is a well known Christian writer, having published numerous books.”

Dr. Robert Burton, Chairman of the Board of National Christian School Association (NCSA), states: "Dr Philip Patterson has led NCSA into the future over the pastdecade to become thepremier national organizationfor Christian schools associated with the Churches of Christ. He has helpedthousands ofstudents have a better Christian school to attend. The networkand influence of these schools can only be measured by the glory it gives to our God."

In 1986, Patterson received the National Teaching Award for excellence in teaching journalism ethics. He has authored a number of books, including Media Ethics: Issues and Cases, Greatest Stories of the Bible and Living Stones: Bedrock Truths for Quicksand Times. Patterson is currently serving as president of the NCSA. He and his wife, Linda, attend the Memorial Road Church of Christ. They have three children, Amy, Andrew and Joshua.

Several OC alums will also receive awards from the SPJ, including Bobby Ross, Jr., Steve Lackmeyer, Christy Watson, David Cathey and Lynn McMillon. Watson, an editorial writer at The Oklahoman and a former Talon editor, will present the award to Patterson.
