About the company
Web site: www.elitemobilewash.com.
Key personnel: Barry Kelley, president and founder.
Key service: Mobile car washing and detailing.
How he dreamed it up then made it work
Barry Kelley wanted to work while going to college. But instead of
spending long hours serving hamburgers like many students, he dreamed
up an idea for his own business and made it happen.
At just 21 years old, Kelley now operates Elite Mobile Wash, a
traveling car wash service in Edmond. He had noticed a lot of nice but
dirty cars around town, and decided that the drivers probably didn’t
have the time to wash them.
“They have cash and not a lot of time,” Kelley said. “They want us to come wash for them.”
Kelley employs two fellow students and, between their class
schedules, they travel to customers’ homes or businesses and wash their
cars. The service is reasonably priced, he said, because they don’t
have to pay for a building.
At first, he used word-of-mouth to gain customers. But business
really took off after he invested in the company’s Web site. “As a
small business, I feel Web presence is very important,” he said.
The Amarillo, Texas, native said he has always worked for himself —
from his first job mowing neighbors’ lawns at age 12. He’s set to
graduate in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in finance, and he’s already
dreaming up new business ideas for the future.
