Ann Ross in the Alumni Spotlights section of AlumNews. Laura graduated OC in 1990 and is
currently the Senior Chief Yeoman for US Navy Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations.
Degree? Bachelor of Science
What are you most known for? Making the most out of life. When I stand before my Maker and Creator, I
want to say that I have made the most out of the opportunities he afforded me -
anything less is unacceptable.
What is your true calling? I love to make people laugh - even if only for a
moment or two.
How'd you find this calling? I don't think I "found" it per se - guess it
sort of came with me from day-one.
What is your biggest personal or
professional achievement so far? Overall, I
think my military service is my biggest achievement. It has been packed with a myriad of
challenges overcome, as well as life lessons that I would have never, ever
learned anywhere else.
What is your proudest moment? The very first time I put on my uniform. At that moment, I knew I was a part of
something much larger than I could comprehend, and that it would involve a
great deal of sacrifice, but the overall impact would be worth it.
What is the biggest professional or
personal hurdle that you've overcome? I
entered into the Navy late in life (or later than the average Sailor) - I had
to work harder to advance in the ranks - wasn't always easy, but turned out to
be overwhelmingly rewarding.
What is something people should know about
you that is not on your resumé? I served in
the Pentagon on 9-11-01 On 13 October,
2006 - in honor of the Navy's Birthday, I got to ring the "Closing
Bell" on Wall Street, with my Boss, Admiral John Nathman
Life's motto? "Work hard, play hard, and do the right thing." "Those who fail to set goals, end up
working for those who do." (that came from a fortune cookie - pretty
Your inspiration? My dad - next to the Lord Jesus Christ, he was truly
the greatest man to ever walk the face of the earth - no doubt, the Angels in
Heaven are having a ball with him right now.
Teamwork or fly solo? Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork - you're only as
successful as the person next to you.
If you woke up tomorrow and had to start a
new career, what would it be? If someone
made me wake up tomorrow and be a property manager for a 5-star, tropical
resort - I would not complain in the least bit!
How do you plan to self improve? I like to continually do "lessons learned" -
I like to think of ways to 'do it better' the next time.
What advice do you have for future
generations? The first step toward failure
is trying to please everyone - stand up for what you believe is right - if you
don't, no one else will. You have got to
have skin like an alligator, a back like a duck, and a phenominally strong back
Describe yourself in 3 words? playful, humble, impatient
How do you spend your down time? I love to spend 'down time' hanging out with my
friends - I believe they're a true haven from the rest of the world.
Passions and diversions? I love to be outside.
Spring and summer are the bombdiggity!!
I live right across the street from a garden/nursery - I easily get
diverted by walking across the street with arm-loads of stuff I have to bring
home and plant.
Stress relievers? Most of my stress comes during the workday. I work in the Pentagon, so I try to get away
and do a couple of laps around the E-ring.
On a nice day, I like to strap on my running shoes and go for a run downtown
What's next for you? Don't really know - but, that's where the fun is,
What are you working toward? My career path after the Navy.
will you make your mark? I like to think that in some ways, I have - I like to
leave things better (or different) than the way I found them.
