Students and the community will come together this weekend in honor of Mike McDonald.
McDonald, a former Oklahoma Christian University vice president and running enthusiast, lost his life to cancer in 2003.
A 5K run/walk coordinated by Gamma Rho and the Alumni Relations office will take place on Saturday to raise money for scholarships at Oklahoma Christian.
There will also be inflatable toys and face painting for children, as well as a hamburger cookout.
The run will begin at 10 a.m. at the gym and will end in front of the library.
For students, the race is $10 and $20 for the community. This cost includes a T-shirt and lunch.
This year's theme is Wheaties. McDonald was a huge fan of the cereal and always looked for coupons so he could buy Wheaties in bulk.
For the McDonald family, the race is more than just running. The family gathers together, and it becomes a mini family reunion.
Director of Alumni Relations Michael Mitchell has been involved with the Fun Run for three years now.
He ran in the race during its first year and has partnered with Gamma to make it happen on Saturday.
"Mike was such a good, solid Christian, and this is really neat for the family and community to be able to come together and dedicate this time to his memory," Mitchell said.
Coordinator for Alumni Relations Corlie Agnew has also been very involved with putting the Fun Run together.
Agnew is a former member and president of Gamma and is very grateful to have the opportunity to help with the Fun Run.
"I just think it's such a great thing that we have even established this at OC because it honors Mike McDonald, and everyone that knew him and worked with him can remember him at least one time a year," Agnew said.
The Fun Run not only has a huge impact on the McDonald family, but it also affects many students by aiding them with scholarship money.
"I personally know students who have received the scholarship money that the Fun Run has designated, and those students have spoken about the impact it has had and how it has made things easier for them," Agnew said.
Students have taken part in the Mike McDonald Fun Run every year since it began.
"I enjoy running because no matter how fast I'm going, it still feels like it takes the same amount of effort," senior Christopher Thomas said. "Also, I just like to think that at least once a year, I did something meaningful."
Gamma Social Service Director Abby Phillips has been involved in the planning since January.
Phillips ran the 5K last year and is happy to be involved from another angle this time around as an overseer of the event.
The event is something Oklahoma Christian is proud to host, and there will be a pizza party awarded to the club with the highest percentage of members involved, excluding Gamma.
"I think that this type of scholarship is really a visible blessing of a family who wants to give back to OC and help students who need money," Phillips said.
