Oklahoma Christian University will host the fifth annual Mike McDonald “Fun Run,” Saturday April 12. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. under the McGraw Pavilion at Lawson Commons, followed by the run at 10.
The five kilometer run/walk raises scholarship money for OC students in honor of Mike McDonald, former OC vice-president, who after a long battle with cancer, passed away December 22, 2003. The women of Gamma Rho and the Alumni Relations Office have worked alongside sponsors, Edmond Physical Therapy and OG&E, to continue the run in honor of McDonald.
This year, for the first time ever, the Mike McDonald Fun Run has a Wheaties theme. According to his children, McDonald was a huge fan of the cereal.
"He used to look at the ads for the week and if he could ever find Wheaties for two bucks a box or less, he'd go buy as many as they would allow one person. He'd drag one of us with him so he could buy as many as possible,” said one of McDonald’s daughters, Mandy Flaming.
The Fun Run will also include a children’s carnival, a fun run for kids, music and a hamburger cookout.
The cost for the entire event is $20 for adults and $10 for OC students and those 18 and under. The fee includes a t-shirt and the cookout. All money collected will go to the Mike McDonald Endowed Scholarship Fund.
