OC Students Selected for Musical Reality Show
Thursday, December 13, 2007
Oklahoma Christian University (OC) students Robin Taylor and Raymond Mobley have been chosen to participate in the Oklahoma City Choir for the NBC musical reality special, “The Clash of the Choirs.” Taylor and Mobley will leave Thursday morning for New York to begin rehearsing and taping.
The show will feature five celebrity singers who returned to their hometowns to assemble a choir of amateur singers. The celebrities are Michael Bolton, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland and Blake Shelton. Shelton will direct the Okahoma City choir. Other choirs are from Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New Haven, Conn., and Houston.
Dr. Ken Adams, professor of music at OC, believes his students’ participation in the reality television show will be a great experience. “We’ve been blessed with many talented performers at Oklahoma Christian,” Adams said, “and they have performed in lots of venues, particularly in the summer when we travel around the U.S. But this is a unique opportunity to not only participate in a major new show, but to see first hand what goes into the production of a network program. And with that type of exposure, who knows? Maybe they’ll be ‘discovered.’”
The five choirs will compete in live performances, singing songs from pop hits to holiday classics. The groups will be eliminated by viewers who will vote by phone, text message or internet until a winner is selected. The winning choir will select a prize that will help their hometown and give something to the community such as a new playground or new neighborhood park.
“The Clash of the Choirs” will be broadcast on NBC on four consecutive nights beginning with a two-hour premier on December 17.
